Set Up Data Feeds for Access in Power BI
The BUCS Data Feed provides access to your consolidated, transformed, report-ready datasets.
This article will show you how to:
- Obtain API credentials so you can connect to the Data Feed in Power BI
- Manage the Data Feed through specifying available data tables and managing passwords
⚠️In order to access the Data Feed Management section of the Customer Portal, users need the Data Feed Manager or Account Administrator role. Click here to learn how to manage user roles.
Obtaining API Credentials to connect to the BUCS Data Feed
1. Log in to the BUCS Customer Portal by going to bucsanalytics.com and using the Client Login button.
2. Choose the Company from the dropdown in the top left corner.
3. Click on Create Data Feed under Data Feed Management in the left-hand side menu.
4. Next choose the Database from the Data Feed Path drop-down, then enter a username for the data feed. This will be the username used to connect to the ODATA API in Power BI. Click Create.
5. The next screen will display the URL and password.
⚠️IMPORTANT: Record these items as they will be used in later steps to create the connection with the Username. Please save the password in a secure location as you will not be able to recover it after you click Done. The password can always be regenerated from the Manage Data Feed menu if lost.
Managing the Data Feed
1. After creating the Data Feed, click the Manage Data Feed link from the left-hand side menu. The newly created Data Feed API connection should be listed with the URL and Username in the main screen.
- Use the Status toggle if you wish to disable the Data Feed and make it inactive.
- Use the Action icon (…) and select Edit to add and remove data tables from the Data Feed as needed.
- Use the Action icon (…) and select Change Password to regenerate a password for the Data Feed.
⚠️IMPORTANT: Note that changing the password will break any existing connections that are set up in applications (e.g. Power BI workspaces), and the new password will need to be entered in those application files to re-establish connections.
2. After clicking Edit, you will see a list of tables included in the Data Feed. Select/deselect individual tables to make changes. A preview of the table with a subset of data will be shown so you can ensure you are selecting the appropriate tables. Click Next.
Note: Available tables section will display the data feed tables that have been configured for the database selected - reach out to support@bucsanalytics.com if questions on available tables.
3. If you want, you can filter the data set to specific connections. This could be used to ensure access is limited to only connections you want to provide access to through the Data Feed instance you are setting up.
Note: If you do not apply a connection filter to the Data Feed, data from all your connections will be included.
